MATCH-2: meaning and examples

Hello again.

Today we continue with our short series of Daily Vitamins about expressions with the English word MATCH. Remember that MATCH can be a verb or a noun. Yesterday's expression (to meet your match) used MATCH as a noun, and today's expression uses MATCH as a verb.

Today's expression is: to match something against something else

Meaning: to compare something with something else in order to find things that are the same or similar.

Example 1:
We are able to narrow down the possible suspects by matching the information in our database against the details of the crime.

Example 2:
New information is matched against existing data in the computer.
