MISTAKE MONDAY: DO/DOES/DID IN QUESTIONS
MISTAKE MONDAY: DO/DOES/DID IN QUESTIONS: meaning and examples
Today for Mistake Monday we focus on another error commonly made by English learners.
Can you spot the blunder in the sentence below?
Sentence 1 (incorrect): **What means the word 'consistent'?**
Students often use this phrase when they want to ask the meaning of a word, but it is incorrect.
To create a question in English with most verbs (the verb BE and the auxiliary verb HAVE are an exception), we use the verb particles DO/DOES/DID in the present or the past, together with the infinitive of the main verb.
Sentence 1 above should be like sentence 2 below.
Sentence 2: What does the word 'consistent' mean?”
Here are some more examples.
Example 1: What do those symbols mean?
Example 2: What did you eat for breakfast this morning?
If you have any questions or comments, we encourage you to post them on our Facebook page.
I'll see you tomorrow for Tense Tuesday. Have a great Monday!
