NEW WORDS FROM 2021 (ALLYSHIP)
NEW WORDS FROM 2021 (ALLYSHIP): meaning and examples
Hello everyone. I hope you had a great weekend.
This is our last week of Daily Vitamins for 2021, and we're going to use it to highlight five "new" words/expressions that became popular this year.
Today's word is: Allyship
Definition: The state of being an ally (=a person who helps and supports someone). Allyship is the practice of emphasizing social justice, inclusion, and human rights by members of an ingroup, to advance the interests of an oppressed or marginalized outgroup. Allyship is part of the anti-oppression or anti-racist conversation, which puts into use social justice theories and ideals.
Example 1: The politician showed his allyship with the minority communities of the city by passing a local law which protects their rights.
Example 2: Activism and allyship with the LGBTQ community are important steps towards changing attitudes.
A more mainstream synonym of allyship would be alliance, which is a group of countries, political parties, or people who have agreed to work together because of shared interests or aims.
Example 3: Some of us feel that the union is in alliance with management against us.
I hope all of you have an excellent day. I'll see you tomorrow with another popular "new" word from 2021.
All the best!
