'NEXT' WITH DAYS OF WEEK: meaning and examples

Good morning.

I have noticed that there is a lot of confusion amongst English students about how to use the adjective next with days of week (for example next Tuesday). Consider the following example.

Example 1:
Next Wednesday I have an appointment with the dentist.

When we say this sentence, we are referring to the Wednesday of next week. So, if it's Monday and we say we have a dentist appoint next Wednesday, we are referring to the Wednesday of next week, not this Wednesday of this week. If we mean the Wednesday of this week, we say this Wednesday.

Example 2 (on Tuesday):
Rachel: Do we have the Board meeting this Friday?
Jason: No Rachel. It's next Friday. This Friday we have the meeting with the Marketing Department.

Therefore, the Marketing meeting is this week (on Friday) and the Board meeting is next week (on Friday).

This Wednesday (tomorrow) we will look at the word anxious in English.
