(NOT) TO GET A WORD IN EDGEWAYS: meaning and examples
Last Wednesday (October 23rd) we learned the expression TAKE YOUR WORD FOR IT. This week we are going to look at more expressions with WORD.
Today's expression is: (NOT) TO GET A WORD IN EDGEWAYS
(NOTE: in the US the expression is "not to get a word in EDGEWISE".)
Meaning: (not) to be able to say anything because someone else is speaking too much.
Example 1:
When Janet starts talking, no one else can get a word in edgeways.
Example 2:
The meeting was a total disaster. The CEO started rambling on and on about responsibility and dedication to the company and no one could get a word in edgeways. It was a total waste of time.
Enjoy the rest of your day. Bye!
