NOTHING-3: meaning and examples
Today we continue our look at expressions with the English pronoun NOTHING.
Today's expression is: to have nothing on someone (informal)
Meaning 1: to have much less of a particular quality compared to someone / something.
Example 1:
Yes...it's true that he was accepted into Harvard, but he has nothing on you. (= being accepted into Harvard doesn't make him better than you.)
Meaning 2: when related to police evidence, to have no information that could prove someone to be guilty.
Example 2:
Police Officer: I'm taking you to the station, and you'll be in prison for a long time.
Criminal: You have nothing on me. I haven't done anything illegal. You're making a big mistake!
