PARTS OF A BOOK 1: meaning and examples

Good morning,

We are going to continue this week's topic of books by giving definitions of the different parts of a book. Before beginning, I'd like to mention that books can be:

HARD COVER --> The cover of a hard cover book is made of a hard material and doesn't bend. Hard cover books are usually more expensive.

PAPERBACK--> The cover of a paperback is made of soft card and can bend. They are cheaper. Paperbacks are sometimes called soft cover books.

E-BOOKS
--> E-books are digital books. The vocabulary in today's Vitamin mostly refers to hard covers or paperbacks but some of the book parts can also be found in e-books.

Now let's look at the outside of a book.

FRONT COVER
--> The front cover is the outside front of the book. It has the book title, the author's name and usually some illustration. It might also have the name of the publisher.

SPINE
--> The spine of the book is the vertical column of the book. When there is a row of books on a bookshelf, the spines of the books will be facing outwards. The spine shows the book title, author name and possibly the publisher or publisher logo. English books usually have the spine text beginning at the top and going downwards as you can see in this image.

BACK COVER
--> The back cover refers to outside back of a book.

BLURB
--> A blurb is a short description of the book. Blurbs are found on the back cover.

REVIEWS
--> Reviews are short, favourable paragraphs or sentences about the book from book critics or reviewers. These can be found on the back cover or inside the book.

We will continue tomorrow with the inside of a book.

Enjoy your day!
