PARTS OF A BOOK 2: meaning and examples

Good morning,

Today we continue our week of 'book talk' by explaining vocabulary for the inside of a book. When we open a book, we find some introductory pages, usually in the same order, before the actual content of the book.

INSIDE COVER --> The inside cover is the inside of the front or back cover. In a hardback this is usually left blank (without writing). In a paperback, you might find reviews here or an author biography and photo (in the back inside cover).

TITLE PAGE
--> The title page is the inside page at the front of the book which contains the book title, author, and publisher information.

COPYRIGHT PAGE --> This page contains copyright information and dates.

DEDICATION PAGE
--> Many authors like to dedicate their books to an important person or people. The dedication page is where they write a sentence or small paragraph to these people.

FOREWORD
--> The foreword is an introduction to the book, written by the author or somebody else (usually a famous person). It gives important information about the book content or praise about the author (if written by someone else).

A book also contains organizational information, particularly if it is non-fiction, usually at the end of the book.

TABLE OF CONTENTS --> The table of contents lists the content of the book, by chapter, section or sub-section. It is always found at the front of the book.

INDEX
--> An index is an alphabetical list of terms, and the page numbers where they can be found. The index is located at the back of the book.

BIBLIOGRAPHY
--> Non-fictional books, particularly, will contain a list of other books or sources that the author has referenced in his/her work. This is the bibliography.

Finally, whatever you are reading, you will be able to find your place in the book much more easily if you use a:

BOOKMARK
--> A bookmark is a piece of material (card, magnet, ribbon etc.) that you place between two pages of a book to mark the spot where you stopped reading.

I hope this information has been useful for you. Perhaps you've spotted some differences in the way books are organized in English? You can post your comments and questions in the Daily Vitamin section on our website.

Have a great day!
