PHRASAL VERB FRIDAY: COOK UP: meaning and examples

Hello and happy Friday readers! I hope that you are having a wonderful week.

With so many holidays in the autumn and winter seasons, we thought it would be a good time to look at a food-related phrasal verb for Phrasal Verb Friday: TO COOK UP.

The first definition is very simple: it's just like using the verb COOK!

Definition 1
: to cook food, especially for others.

Example 1: My neighbours are cooking up something good. It smells delicious!

Definition 2
: to invent something using your imagination (and often dishonestly).

Example 2: He cooked up a story about how he was robbed, but I don't think he was.

Example 3: The thieves cooked up a plan to rob the bank.

Example 4: I haven't heard from the lawyer in three days. I don't know what she's cooking up.

This verb, with both meanings, is SEPARABLE and TRANSITIVE.
