PHRASAL VERB FRIDAY: 'DROP OUT (OF SOMETHING)': meaning and examples

Welcome to Phrasal Verb Friday, readers! Today I'd like you to think of a time you enrolled in a course or program or a class... and then quit. Has this happened to you? If so, then you can use today's phrasal verb, TO DROP OUT (OF SOMETHING)

Definition 1: to abandon a course of study.

Example 1: Did you know that Steve Jobs AND Bill Gates dropped out of college

Example 2: I dropped out of dance when I was eight years old. I didn't like it. 

Example 3: She didn't like the class, so she dropped out

Definition 2: to stop participation in a race or competition. 

Example 4
: He had to drop out of the race because he hurt his leg.

This phrasal verb is NON-SEPARABLE. Notice that when it is TRANSITIVE, we use the preposition OF to show what the person dropped out of. It can also be INTRANSITIVE, as in Example 3.
