PHRASAL VERB FRIDAY: FREAK OUT: meaning and examples

Hello everyone! It's October and we can't help but write many Halloween-themed posts. Today we are looking at a colloquial phrasal verb that we use all year, but which is exceptionally useful during Halloween: TO FREAK OUT.

Definition 1
: to cause someone fear or excitement.

Example 1
: You freaked me out with your scary costume!

Example 2
: That horror movie really freaked us out. We can't sleep now!

Example 3
: That mask freaks out my dog.

With this definition, the phrasal verb is TRANSITIVE and SEPARABLE.

The second definition is very similar.

Definition 2
: To go into a state of heightened fear or excitement.

Example 4
: I freaked out when I thought my phone was broken.

Example 5
: He lost his keys, and then he freaked out.

With this definition, the phrasal verb is INTRANSITIVE.
