PHRASAL VERB FRIDAY: LEAVE OUT: meaning and examples
For our first Phrasal Verb Friday of the month, we are looking at a term that we can use for Christmas: TO LEAVE (something) OUT.
Definition: to not put something away, so that another person can take or use it later.
It is often part of the Christmas tradition to LEAVE gifts (or other things) OUT for our loved ones.
Example 1: We left cookies out for Santa Claus. We also left out some milk.
Example 2: What types of cookies did you leave out for Santa when you were a child?
Example 3: We didn't leave biscuits out when we were children; we left out cupcakes.
Of course, we can use this for non-Christmas situations.
Example 4: I left your dinner out for you. It's on the table: just heat it up.
As you can see, this transitive phrasal verb is separable.
