PHRASAL VERB FRIDAY: 'STAND SOMEONE UP': meaning and examples
For today's lesson, we are looking at the phrasal verb TO STAND SOMEONE UP.
Definition: to fail to go to a meeting that you planned.
Example 1: The man waited for an hour at the restaurant before leaving. I think someone stood him up.
Example 2: I was stood up once before. It was terrible!
Note that this phrasal verb can be SEPARATED. It can also be TRANSITIVE, like in Example 1, or INTRANSITIVE, like in Example 2.
If the object is a pronoun, then it must be used with the SEPARABLE version of the phrasal verb.
Example 3: She stood him up. (NOT "She stood up him.")
Hopefully this is not a phrasal verb you will ever have to use!
