PHRASAL VERB FRIDAY: THREE-WORD PHRASAL VERB 'CHECK UP ON': meaning and examples
As you know, on Phrasal Verb Friday the Daily Vitamin focuses on English phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs typically have two parts: a verb and another word (called an adverbial particle). However, sometimes a phrasal verb has THREE parts: a verb and two particles. For the month of October, we will look at three-word phrasal verbs.
Today's Phrasal Verb: Check up on
Definition 1: to look; to see if someone or something is OK.
Example 1: I just checked up on the baby. She is sleeping peacefully.
Example 2: I am sick, so my neighbor came to check up on me.
Definition 2: to find the truth about something.
Example 3: The numbers in this report are very high. Can you check up on them?
Definition 3: to see if a person is doing what they said they were doing.
Example 4: It is homework time, but when I checked up on the kids, they were playing video games!
