PHRASAL VERB FRIDAY: 'TRIP UP': meaning and examples
For today's Phrasal Verb Friday, we are looking at the term TO TRIP SOMEONE UP.
Definition 1: to confuse someone.
Example 1: His question about taxes tripped up the Mayor.
Example 2: The test was easy, but question #6 really tripped me up. I don't remember studying that topic.
In these cases, the phrasal verb is SEPARABLE and TRANSITIVE. However, there is a non-transitive version of this verb.
Definition 2: to make a mistake.
Example 3: Did you hear his answer? He really tripped up.
Example 4: I did well on the CAE Speaking Test, but I tripped up on the Listening.
In these cases, the phrasal verb is NON-SEPARABLE and INTRANSITIVE.
