Definition: To begin one's life, or existence, or career. 

Example 1: Frogs start out as tadpoles

Example 2: I started out as a coffee shop employee and I worked up to a managerial position.

Example 3: We started out as a small business and grew into a large corporation.

This phrasal verb is inseparable and transitive
