PHRASES FOR JOKES AND PRANKS: meaning and examples
Hello everyone and welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope you had an excellent weekend, and I hope your week has started off well.
Since tomorrow is April Fools' Day, this week we are focusing on phrases related to jokes and pranks. A prank is a practical joke or mischievous act, which is very common on April Fools' Day.
Today's 1st phrase is: Just kidding or I'm just kidding
Meaning / Use: we use this phrase to clarify that what we said was not serious. Sometimes we also say just joking or I'm only joking.
Dialogue 1:
Anna: Someone said you got a pet alligator! Is that true?
Jake: Yeah, I take him for walks in the park every morning.
Anna: What? Seriously?!
Jake: Just kidding! I can barely take care of a goldfish.
Today's 2nd phrase is: You really had me going there
Meaning / Use: we use this phrase to express that the prank or joke was convincing.
Dialogue 2:
Tom: Guess what? I just won the lottery!
Sarah: No way! That’s amazing!
Tom: Yeah… I’m quitting my job tomorrow.
Sarah: Wait… seriously?
Tom: Nah, I'm just messing with you.
Sarah: Ugh! You really had me going there!
👉 Now it's your turn. I encourage you to write your own sentence or dialogue with one or both of today's phrase. You can post your writing on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Bluesky) and we will give you feedback about it ASAP.
