PLAY / GO / DO (1)
PLAY / GO / DO (1): meaning and examples
Last week's Daily Vitamins were related to fitness and exercising. This week we are going to look at the three main verbs used in English for talking about sports and other physical activities:
TO PLAY
TO GO
TO DO
We are going to look at when each of these verbs is normally used. Today we will begin with the verb TO PLAY.
It means: to participate in a sport or game.
We use this verb for sports which use balls or a puck (football, hockey, volleyball, basketball, tennis, golf, billiards, etc.). The verb TO PLAY is also used for card games and board games (juegos de mesa) like Monopoly or Ludo), although these are not sports in the strict "physical" sense of the word.
Example 1:
When I was in high school, I played American-style football, but now I prefer to play non-contact sports like tennis or golf.
Example 2:
Marcie: Hey, Bob. Do you know which team Maradona played for when he was in Italy?
Bob: Of course. He played football for Naples.
Tomorrow we will look at GO as a sport verb.
Have a great day!
