(PREFIXES) PRE- / DIS-
(PREFIXES) PRE- / DIS-: meaning and examples
Good morning / afternoon / evening everyone, depending on when you are reading this. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope you are doing well.
Today we look at two more common prefixes in English.
Today's first prefix is: PRE-
Meaning PRE-: before
Example 1:
I was so excited to preview the film last night. I loved it. When it comes out next month, be sure to watch it. I know you'll love it too.
In this case PRE- means "before." The speaker was able to view the film before the official release date next month.
Example 2:
He predicted the economic crisis months before it started. He's an incredible economist.
In this case, the economist says (dict) there will be a crises months before (PRE-) it started.
Today's second prefix is: DIS-
Meaning DIS-: not or opposite.
Example 3: I'm sorry Pablo, I disagree with your proposal. I think we should follow Yolanda's proposal instead.
Here DIS- has the meaning of not or opposite.
Example 4: After the meeting you just disappeared. Where have you been? We have to finish the summary of the meeting.
Here DIS- has the meaning of opposite.
Once again, I encourage you to write a sentence or two with words that use these prefixes. You can add the DIS- prefix to words such as AGREE, CONNECT, APPEAR or APPROVE. And with the prefix PRE- you can alter words such as HISTORIC, VIEW, ARRANGE and PAY. You can post your sentences on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter/X) and we will give you feedback about them as soon as we can. Thanks for your participation!
I hope you have a great day!
