PRONOUNS: meaning and examples

Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin everyone. I hope your day is going well.

Like in Spanish (and other romance languages), there are many different types of pronouns in English: Subject pronouns (I, you, he, she, we, they, it), object pronouns (me, you, him, her, it, us, them), reflexive pronouns (myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, themselves), reciprocal pronouns (each other, one another), interrogative pronouns (who, which, whom, what. whose), etc.

If you are a Speaker of Spanish, Catalan, or another Romance language, it can be a challenge to learn how to use subject, object, reflexive, reciprocal and interrogative pronouns. For example, the rules about where they are placed in the sentence can be very different than in your native language.

Following are some examples with subject and object pronouns, and then I include some links to other past Daily Vitamins that can give you more information about reflexive, reciprocal and interrogative pronouns

Subject Pronouns
Subjects are obligatory in English. They cannot be left out, as they can be in Spanish: so, we often use the pronoun.

Example 1:
Alex: Jack is one of the friendliest individuals I have ever met.
Mary: Yes, I agree. He is.

Object Pronouns
English learners are often confused about where to place object pronouns. Consider the example below, that has both a direct and indirect object pronoun

Example 2:
Aaron: I gave the money to Jackie.
Patrick: What? Why did you give it to her? That money was for Lisa!
Aaron. I'm sorry. I thought it was for Jackie.

Following are links to past Daily Vitamins from a week in January 2021 when we looked at different types of pronouns.
