RECIPE vs. PRESCRIPTION (REVIEW)
RECIPE vs. PRESCRIPTION (Review): meaning and examples
We have been talking about words related to health, so I thought it would be a good day to review a related false friend, RECIPE versus PRESCRIPTION. We last looked at this pair of words in October of 2007.
Today's word is: Recipe
Meaning: instructions that tell you how to cook something and the ingredients that you need for it.
Example 1:
She has an excellent recipe for lasagne, but she won't share it with anyone. She says it's a secret.
Recipe can also mean: a method or an idea that seems likely to get a result.
Example 2:
I'm sorry...but I think the Managing Director's plan is a recipe for disaster! We're all going to lose our jobs if he carries it out.
NOTE: You cannot translate this word as receta médica in Spanish. This is a prescription. A prescription (NOT a recipe) is a piece of paper on which a doctor writes the type of medicine that you need, so you can go and get it from the Chemist.
Example 3:
You cannot get antibiotics without a prescription.
I'll see you tomorrow. Have a great day!
