RETIREMENT vs. JUBILATION: meaning and examples

Good morning!

Today we are going to look at a false friend (a word that looks similar in both Spanish and English but that has a different meaning).

RETIREMENT
Meaning: the time of life when you stop working because of old age, usually around 65 years old.

JUBILATION
Meaning: an act or feeling of great joy and triumph, or of celebration.

Example 1:
The age of retirement is increasing in Europe from 65 to 68, partly because of the ageing population.

Example 2:
A feeling of great jubilation came over the country when Spain won the World Football Cup in 2010.

Tomorrow we present the Essential Weekly Vitamin in Spanish, for Spanish-speaking students of English.

Enjoy the rest of your day!
