SAYING NO (1)
SAYING NO (1): meaning and examples
Good morning.
In English there are different ways of saying 'no,' depending on the situation and how strong you want your 'no' to be. Today we are going to look at a couple of examples, and on Monday we will look at some more.
Today's first NO-expression is: I'm afraid not
Example 1:
Lori: Are you coming to my party tonight?
Mark: I'm afraid not. I have to work late.
This expression is more polite than simply saying "no!"
Today's second NO-expression is: Not really
Example 2:
Eric: Would you like to do something special for your birthday?
Heather: Not really. I'd be happy to stay home and relax with you and the children.
We use not really when we don't care too much about something.
Monday we will continue by including a few more expressions. In the meantime, enjoy your weekend!
I'll see you on Monday.
