SCRATCH (3)
SCRATCH (3): meaning and examples
Today's expression is: TO SCRATCH THE SURFACE
It means: to do something in a superficial way, without going deep into detail. This expression is often used with the words barely or hardly to indicate that there is no deep analysis of the situation.
Example 1:
I had planned to explain the meaning of life in my philosophy lecture, but it was only an hour long and I barely scratched the surface of this topic.
Example 2:
We wanted to make a lot more business contacts last year, but we hardly scratched the surface. This year we are going to dedicate more time to marketing.
