SCRATCH (4)
SCRATCH (4): meaning and examples
Today we continue our series of Daily Vitamins about SCRATCH with another expression.
Today's expression is: TO (NOT) BE UP TO SCRATCH
It means: to reach (or not reach) an acceptable level of performance. It is often used with the negative form of the verb 'be' to say that a person is not working at an acceptable level.
Example 1:
We have decided not to renew your contract, I'm afraid, since your work has simply not been up to scratch. We have very high standards here at AMAX Corporation.
Example 2:
After your trial period in the kitchen, I think that we all agree that your work during this time was definitely up to scratch, so we'd like to offer you a part-time job, starting on Monday.
Remember that tomorrow we present the Essential Weekly Vitamin for Spanish-speaking students of English.
Have a pleasant day!
