SCRATCH (5)
SCRATCH (5): meaning and examples
I hope you had a really nice weekend! Last week we explained some expressions with the word SCRATCH. Today we present our last expression with this word.
Today's expression is: IF YOU SCRATCH MY BACK, I'LL SCRATCH YOURS
It means: If you do a favour for me, I will do a favour for you in return. This expression is often used with a slightly coercive tone or to refer to clandestine activities.
Example 1:
Vince: I'd really appreciate it if you paid me under the table* for this work.
Frank: But that's illegal, Vince! I could get in trouble!
Vince: Listen, Frank. If you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours. And nobody will ever know!
*without legally declaring taxes for the work
Example 2:
Mabel: I'm looking for someone to take care of my cats while I'm away. Could you do it? If you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours.
Ben: Oh sure, no problem. You can do the same for me some other time.
Have a great day!
