SHORT vs. LOW: meaning and examples

Good morning!

Today is the last day of our series about words for describing dimensions. Today's words are the opposites of yesterday's words (which were tall and high). Today we look at short and low (noun). Both are translated to Spanish as bajo when referring to height, but short can also be translated as corto.

Meaning of short
: used to refer to something that has a small length or distance (horizontal) or height (vertical). We can also use it to refer to duration (i.e. how long something lasts).

Meaning of low: This word refers to something that is close to or near the ground or horizon. It can also refer to things that are smaller than usual in volume, intensity or extension.

Example 1:
Sally is quite short, so she prefers to wear high-heeled shoes. She has also adjusted the furniture in her home to her height. For example, all the bookshelves are low.

Example 2
:
Tim: To get to the river, you have to climb over the wall near the abandoned house.
Brenda: Which wall? The long, low wall at the back of the library parking lot or the short, high wall near the factory? They're both near that old house.

Example 3:
Ned threw the ball so low that it was impossible to catch.

Expression
: high and low

Meaning
: in all possible places. This expression is often used with the verbs 'to look for', 'to search' and 'to hunt for', meaning to look for something exhaustively.

Example 4:
He hunted high and low for his passport but couldn't find it, so he had to apply for a new one.
