SPORTS-RELATED EXPRESSIONS (CALL THE SHOTS): meaning and examples
Hello everyone. I hope you are having a good morning / afternoon / evening, depending on when you are reading this.
Last week we looked at 5 sports-related expressions, and this week we are looking at 5 more. Today is our third expression of the week.
Today's sports-related expression is: To call the shots
Definition: to decide on the course of action; to be in charge.
Example 1: Erin, you're a great director and your staff has to do what you say because, well... you're the boss and you call the shots here. But try to lead with a little more empathy. I think you'll have more success with your team.
Example 2: Mike always wants to call the shots, and Jack doesn't like to be bossed around; so they don't get along very well.
If you really want to improve your English, you must be calling the shots. You shouldn't depend on anyone else; you have to take control.
Do you call the shots with your English? What do you do to stay in contact with English on a daily basis? Tell us about it on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter). The more ideas we share, the better. :-)
