SPORTS-RELATED EXPRESSIONS (MAKE THE CUT): meaning and examples

Hello again everyone. I hope you're having a good day.

Today we are looking at our second sports expression of the week.

Today's sports-related expression is: To make the cut

Definition: This expression comes from golf, originally, and it means to match or better the score necessary to remain in the final two rounds of a four-round tournament. However, we use it a lot in work/business contexts. In this context it means to meet the requirements necessary for an application to be successful or to be selected from a group of candidates.

Example 1: Yesterday I had a second interview with a company I would like to work for, and they just called me to tell me that I made the cut for the 3rd and final round of interviews. I'm very excited. I really want this job!

Example 2: You might have an impressive resume, but you'll never make the cut if you don't have an excellent level of English.

Do you have a story about a time where you did or didn't make the cut? If so, I encourage you to submit a sentence about that situation on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter) and we will give you feedback as soon as possible.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

All the best!
