SPORTS-RELATED EXPRESSIONS (STRIKE OUT): meaning and examples

Hello everyone! I hope your week is going well.

Welcome to our third lesson of the week. As you know, this week we are looking at idioms and expressions related to sports.

Today's sports-related expression is: To strike out

Definition: this is an informal expression that is mostly used in the US. It means to be unsuccessful. The phrase strike out comes from the game of baseball.

Example 1: I was so excited to go on a date with her, but I really struck out. She wouldn't even let me give her a kiss goodnight when I dropped her off at her house.

Example 2: After 5 meetings and several estimates, I struck out with the potential client that I had been working on. But that's okay, today I received a request for information from a very important company. This time I know it's going to work out and they will become our client.

Have a great day and I'll see you tomorrow with another lesson.

All the best!
