SPOT: meaning and examples

Meaning 1 (noun): A small mark or point, usually round, on a surface.
Example 1:
There are a few spots of ink on that paper. It doesn't look very professional. I think it's best to begin again.
Meaning 2 (noun): A specific place or location.
Example 2:
Lake Nauhuat is a lonely spot, inaccessible by road. To get there, you'll have to hike or take a canoe.
Example 3:
You said you had washed the floor but I think you missed that spot behind the couch. It's a bit dusty back there.
Meaning 3 (verb): to notice something or see something, particularly if you are looking for it.
Example 4:
Angela: If we're really quiet and we don't move, we may be able to spot a bird.
Sandy: How exciting! I have my camera all ready to take a photo.
Example 5:
When I worked as a magazine editor, I became very good at spotting grammatical and spelling errors.
Cultural Note: Did you know that Spot is a common English name to call a dog, particularly in the US? In fact, there was a popular children's book series about a girl called Jane and a boy called Dick and their dog, called Spot.
