This week, we have been looking at words and phrases related to spring. Our final Spring Vocabulary lesson is a phrasal verb. It is TO SPRING SOMETHING ON SOMEONE.
Definition: To suddenly tell someone something––or ask someone something––when they do not expect it.
Example 1: My daughter had six weeks to write a report about World War II. She just sprung this news on me last night, and now she is saying that she needs my help!
Example 2: They asked me if I could watch their dog and I said yes. I don't want to, but they sprung the question on me after they made me dinner, and I couldn't say no.
As you can see, this phrasal verb is both TRANSITIVE and SEPARABLE.
