SUFFIXES: -ABLE / -IBLE
SUFFIXES: -ABLE / -IBLE: meaning and examples
Hello everyone. I hope you had a great weekend. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin!
A couple of weeks ago, we covered various common prefixes in English. This week we are going to look at common SUFFIXES in English.
Today we look at two suffixes, which each have variations in spelling, depending on the word that they are added to.
Today's 1st suffix is: -ABLE / -IBLE
Meaning -ABLE / -IBLE: Capable of.
Example 1:
Wow, the air is so clean today. The Sierra Mountains are visible today.
So visible means "capable of being seen."
Today's 2nd suffix is: -ER / -OR
Meaning -ER / -OR: One who performs an action.
Example 2:
I think Mr. Avila was one of the best teachers that I ever had.
In example 2, the suffix -ER turns the verb "teach" into the person who performs the act of teaching (teacher)
Example 3:
The actor had trouble learning his lines for the play because the document with the script was not very readable.
I encourage you to write some sentences with some words that use these suffixes. You can add the -ABLE to ADAPT, PORT, ENJOY, BREAK or UNDERSTAND. Or you can add -ER to words like READ, SPEAK, RUN and LISTEN. You can post your sentences on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter/X) and we will give you feedback about your writing ASAP. I hope you will participate, since it can help you to improve your English.
We'll be back tomorrow with another lesson.
All the best!
