SUFFIXES (-S / -ES / -TION / -SION
SUFFIXES (-S / -ES / -TION / -SION: meaning and examples
Happy Friday everyone! Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope you have had a nice week, and I also hope your day is going well.
Today, for the last time, we look at two common English suffixes.
Today's 1st suffix is: -S / -ES
Meaning -S / -ES: Creates the plural form of a noun.
Example 1:
I have only read one book this year, while my wife has already read 15 books! She's amazing.
Today's 2nd suffix is: -TION / -SION
Meaning -TION / -SION: The action or result of something.
This suffix generally transforms verbs into nouns.
Example 2:
When she was fired from her job, she received a very nice compensation.
Example 3:
Many parents find it difficult to initiate the discussion about sex with their children.
As always, I encourage you to write some sentences with some words that use these suffixes. For example, you can add the suffix -S / -ES to any noun you wish to use. I think everyone knows this plural suffix, but do you know when you need to add the "e" before the "s"? You can also add the suffix -TION / -SION to words like CREATE, DECIDE, INFORM, PROMOTE, PROTECT, TRANSMIT and CONFUSE.
As always, you can post your sentences on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter/X) and we will give you feedback about your sentences ASAP. We hope you'll write some sentences, since it will give you practice that will help you to improve your English.
Enjoy the rest of your day and have an excellent weekend! We'll be back Monday with lessons about how to express likes and dislikes.
All the best!
