TALKING ABOUT THE WEATHER (SUMMER)
TALKING ABOUT THE WEATHER (SUMMER): meaning and examples
Hello everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope all of you are doing well.
As you probably know, in English (and many other languages), it's common to use "small talk" when you want to start a conversation in a formal situation or with someone you don't know, for example when you're in a lift or waiting in a cue in a supermarket. And one of the most common topics in one of those "small talk" conversations is the weather.
So, for the rest of this week we are going to give you phrases that you can use to speak about the weather in a more creative way; we'll cover a season each day over the next four days. Today we give you some phrases that are generally used in the summer, when the weather is very warm or hot.
Phrase 1: To sweat bullets
Meaning: To sweat a lot; to sweat profusely. It can also be used figuratively to mean that you are very nervous or anxious.
Example 1: It is very hot today. I've been sweating bullets all day.
Example 2: I was so nervous before my interview; I was sweating bullets. But I got the job and am very happy.
Phrase 2: Sweltering heat
Meaning: If you describe the weather as sweltering, you mean that it is extremely hot and makes you feel uncomfortable..
Example 3: When the air conditioner broke on the hot summer day, the office became filled with sweltering heat, which meant that everyone was sweating bullets.
