TALL vs. HIGH: meaning and examples

Good morning!

Today we're going to look at the difference between two more descriptive words: tall and high. Both are translated to Spanish as alto. Sometimes they are used interchangeably, but there is a difference between them. Let's have a look.

Meaning of tall: This word refers to the verticle measurement (height) of something from top to bottom. We often use this word to refer to the height of people, trees and buildings.

Meaning of high: This word refers to the distance of something above the ground. High may also be used to refer to the height of trees or buildings but NOT people.

Example 1:
Jason was six and a half feet tall* by the time he was fifteen. Every basketball coach in the county tried to get him to join a team, but he just wasn't interested in sports.

*In US English, height is expressed in feet and inches. (1 foot = 30.48 cm.)

Example 2
:
The former Sears Tower in Chicago used to be considered the tallest building in the world, but now the tallest building is a skycraper called the Burj-Khalifa, located in Dubai.

Example 3:
The cabin is located high above the river on the east side of the mountain.

Be careful not to confuse the adjective form (high) with the noun form (height). Notice the difference in pronunciation as you listen to the next example.

Example 4:
Passenger airplains fly at a height of 10,000 meters above sea level.

I hope you enjoyed this Vitamin.

Enjoy the rest of your day!
