TECHNOLOGICAL VOCAB: BIG DATA
TECHNOLOGICAL VOCAB: BIG DATA: meaning and examples
Happy Thursday, and Happy Halloween (if you celebrate Halloween). Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin.
Today's 1st technological concept is: Smart home
Meaning: A smart home is one that is equipped with technology that allows for the automation and remote control of household systems like lighting, heating, and security.
This definition is very related to the definition of the Internet of Things (IoT) that we spoke about on Monday. A Smart Home is a specific application of the IoT technology, where various household devices and appliances are connected and controlled remotely.
Example 1 (humorous):
My smart home is so advanced that it knows when I'm about to binge-watch my favourite show and dims the lights, it makes popcorn and locks the fridge so I can’t snack during the suspenseful moments!
Today's 2nd technological concept is: Big Data
Meaning: Extremely large data sets that can be analysed computationally to reveal patterns, trends, and associations, particularly relating to human behaviour and interactions.
Example 2:
Big data has transformed how businesses approach marketing by enabling them to analyse customer behaviour and preferences.
Example 3:
By analysing big data from smart-home devices, companies can improve their products and services to better meet the needs of homeowners.
What do you know about big data? Do you have a smart home or any smart-home technology where you live? To get some writing practice, tell us what you know about big data and smart homes. You can write your answers on one of our social media sites (Facebook or Twitter/X) and we will give you feedback ASAP.
NOTE: Tomorrow (Friday) is a bank holiday in Spain, so there will be no Daily Vitamin.
I hope the rest of your day goes well and I hope you have an excellent weekend!
All the best!
