TENSE TUESDAY: ADVERBIAL PHRASES: meaning and examples

Hello and welcome to Tense Tuesday for The Daily Vitamin!

Today we are looking at Adverbial Phrases. An Adverbial Phrase is a group of two or more words that work "adverbially," which means that these words modify the action or verb of the sentence, just like an adverb does.

We use Adverbial Phrases for different things, but one option is to express how certain we are about something. Some common Adverbial Phrases are WITHOUT A DOUBT and IN ALL LIKELIHOODWe use WITHOUT A DOUBT when we are 100% sure about something. We use IN ALL LIKELIHOOD to show that there is a strong chance of something happening, but it's not 100% sure.

Example 1: She is, without a doubt, the best employee I have ever had.

Example 2: Without a doubt, they will arrive late.

Example 3: In all likelihood the party will begin later than we planned.

Example 4: I am trying to bake a cake, but in all likelihood I will burn it!
