TENSE TUESDAY: 'BE INFINITIVE': meaning and examples

Hello everyone and welcome back to our second post of the 2015-2016 academic year!

You may remember that Tuesday is Tense Tuesday, where we look at a small grammar lesson, usually related to a verb tense. For today's post, we are looking at the construction BE INFINITIVE. We use BE INFINITIVE for rules, instructions, and plans

Example 1: Employees are to respond to all emails within 24 hours.

Example 2: You are to return the equipment in the same condition as I gave it to you.

Example 3: The President is to give a speech this evening.

When the sentence is negative, we use the construction BE NOT INFINITIVE

Example 4: You are not to use bad language when children are present.

Example 5: Guests are not to enter the party until 9:00 PM.

You will see this construction on many public signs that show rules and instructions.

That's all for today! Thanks for reading. We will see you tomorrow for Wordy Wednesday!
