TENSE TUESDAY: 'BE INFINITIVE': meaning and examples
You may remember that Tuesday is Tense Tuesday, where we look at a small grammar lesson, usually related to a verb tense. For today's post, we are looking at the construction BE INFINITIVE. We use BE INFINITIVE for rules, instructions, and plans.
Example 1: Employees are to respond to all emails within 24 hours.
Example 2: You are to return the equipment in the same condition as I gave it to you.
Example 3: The President is to give a speech this evening.
When the sentence is negative, we use the construction BE NOT INFINITIVE.
Example 4: You are not to use bad language when children are present.
Example 5: Guests are not to enter the party until 9:00 PM.
You will see this construction on many public signs that show rules and instructions.
