TENSE TUESDAY: FUTURE IN THE PAST
TENSE TUESDAY: FUTURE IN THE PAST: meaning and examples
With the construction WAS/WERE GOING TO, we look back at a time in the past but talk about how (at that time) we were looking at the future.
Here are some examples:
Example 1: By the time I left school, I knew I was going to be a doctor.
Example 2: Before I found a hotel with rooms, I was afraid we were going to sleep in the airport!
Example 3: Until I met my wife, I thought I was going to be single forever.
In each of these examples, we see what our future thoughts were at a point in the past. We use the Simple Past to say when these thoughts happened, and WAS/WERE GOING TO in order to show our future thoughts at that time.
To practice this a little, finish this sentence:
When I was 15, I . . .
