TENSE TUESDAY: 'NEEDN'T HAVE PAST PARTICIPLE'
TENSE TUESDAY: 'NEEDN'T HAVE PAST PARTICIPLE': meaning and examples
For this week's Tense Tuesday, we are looking at NEEDN'T HAVE PAST PARTICIPLE. We use this to talk about completed but unnecessary actions.
Example 1: I needn't have bought so much pizza. Only half of the guests came to the party.
Example 2: You needn't have given me a gift for my birthday; but thank you so much!
Example 3: He needn't have washed the car: it rained the next day.
Notice how in each of these cases, the action was completed in the past, and in the present we can see that this action was unnecessary.
That's all for today. Thanks for reading! Have a wonderful day.
