TENSE TUESDAY: PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS AS A CAUSE OF SOMETHING IN THE PAST: meaning and examples
The Past Perfect Continuous form is:
HAD BEEN -ING or HAD (NOT) BEEN -ING
One way we use it is with the Simple Past to show cause and effect in the past. The past perfect continuous action is what causes the Simple Past state; the past perfect continuous action happens before the simple past action.
Example 1: Her eyes were red because she had been crying.
Example 2: He was out of breath because he had been running.
Example 3: I hadn't been sleeping much at that time, so I was really tired during the interview.
Example 4:

Jack: He had been running in the rain.
