TENSE TUESDAY: PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS AS A CAUSE OF SOMETHING IN THE PAST: meaning and examples

Hello, readers! For this week's Tense Tuesday, we are exploring one use of the Past Perfect Continuous

The Past Perfect Continuous form is:

HAD BEEN -ING or HAD  (NOT)  BEEN -ING

One way we use it is with the Simple Past to show cause and effect in the past. The past perfect continuous action is what causes the Simple Past state; the past perfect continuous action happens before the simple past action.

Example 1: Her eyes were red because she had been crying

Example 2
: He was out of breath because he had been running

Example 3
: I hadn't been sleeping much at that time, so I was really tired during the interview.

Example 4:
John: Why was he wet when he arrived?
Jack: He had been running in the rain.

This completes our lesson for today. Thank you for reading! Have a spectacular day.
