TENSE TUESDAY: PRESENT PERFECT WITH PAST EXPERIENCES: meaning and examples

Good morning everyone. Are you feeling tense today? I hope not. ;-)

As you know, on Tense Tuesday the Daily Vitamin focuses on one of the twelve English tenses. Today we are looking at the Present Perfect with non-specific time to talk about past experiences. Consider the following examples.

Example 1: I have been to China.

Example 2
: I have ridden in a helicopter.

Example 3
: I have driven a boat.

In these examples, we know that the speaker had these experiences in the past, but we do not know exactly when these things happened. When did the speaker go to China? Or ride in a helicopter? With these sentences, we do not know.

Incidentally, this tense is used the same in Spanish.

Example 4 (Span): ¿Has estado alguna vez en los EEUU?
(Here I don't care when, just whether or not you have had the experience of travelling to the US.)

Tune in next week when we look at how to use the Present Perfect with specific time, so that we can add more information to sentences like the ones above.

Have a great day!
