TENSE TUESDAY: STOP -ING OR INFINITIVE: meaning and examples
Today we are looking at the word STOP followed by the gerund (-ING) or the INFINITIVE form of a verb. The meaning of the sentence changes depending on whether you use gerund or infinitive.
STOP -ING means TO QUIT something.
Example 1: I am going to stop smoking this year.
Example 2: She said she will stop drinking coffee in 2015.
STOP INFINITIVE means TO STOP AN ACTION TO BEGIN ANOTHER.
Example 3: We stopped (working) to drink some coffee.
Example 4: She stopped to take a photo.
Example 5: I stopped to rest, and then I kept running.
