TENSE TUESDAY: SUPERLATIVES
TENSE TUESDAY: SUPERLATIVES: meaning and examples
For Tense Tuesday, we are looking at SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES.
Superlative adjectives are used to describe the upper or lower extreme of something. We often use them to describe something in relation to other things.
With one or two syllable adjectives, we add -EST to the end of the word. In the examples below, the SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVE is the last one.
Example 1: tall, taller, tallest
Example 2: fast, faster, fastest
Example 3: happy, happier, happiest
Notice the spelling change (y --> i) in example 3.
With three or more syllable adjectives, we do not change the adjective. Instead, we use the format THE MOST ADJECTIVE.
Example 4: This car is the most expensive.
Example 5: The most important thing to do when learning a language is to practise.
Of course, there are irregular superlatives, but we will look at those in another lesson.
Have a great day and we'll see you tomorrow! Thank you for reading.
