TENSE TUESDAY: THE MODAL "OUGHT TO"
TENSE TUESDAY: THE MODAL OUGHT TO: meaning and examples
For today's lesson, we are looking at the modal verb OUGHT TO.
Over the years we have created quite a few lessons about modal verbs. (Some of the lessons are explained in Spanish.) You can see the modal lessons at the link below.

OUGHT TO is a modal that is similar to SHOULD. We use it to give advice. It is followed by the base form of a verb (= infinitive without "to").
Example 1: You ought to call your mother.
Example 2: He ought to pay attention to the lecture.
For the negative, we use OUGHT NOT TO.
Example 3: You ought not to eat so many sweets.
Example 4: She ought not to speak so loudly in the theatre.
OUGHT TO is perhaps more common in UK English than US English; in the US SHOULD is used more often.
That's all for today! Thanks for reading!
