TENSE TUESDAY: WILL FOR QUICK DECISIONS: meaning and examples

Hello, and welcome to today's Daily Vitamin!

For Tense Tuesday, we are looking at the future. Here are the possible grammatical structures that we can use to express the future in English:

--> WILL INFINITIVE

Example 1: I will go to the cinema tonight.

--> BE GOING TO INFINITIVE

Example 2: I am going to travel to Nicaragua this summer.

In some instances these two forms are virtually interchangeable, but there are times when one of these is more correct.

On November 3rd, we looked at how we use WILL to talk about future promises. Click here to see that lesson.

We also use WILL  INFINITIVE for decisions we make quickly.

Example 3: (The doorbell rings.) I'll get it!

Example 4: (Dinner is over.) I'll do the dishes.

Example 5: (Someone asks for a favour.) I'll do it.

In each of these examples, the speaker does not take a lot of time to make the decision.

Next week, we will look at ways to use the other form of the future,
BE GOING TO INFINITIVE. Make sure to check back for that lesson. We will see you tomorrow for our Wordy Wednesday lesson on a common expression, COLD TURKEY.

Have a great day!
