TENSE TUESDAY: 'WISH' & 'COULD' FOR WISHES ABOUT THE FUTURE: meaning and examples
What is a wish you have for the future that probably won't come true? That's what today's Tense Tuesday lesson is about: WISH...COULD for wishes about the future.
We use the following form to express a wish about the future.
Subject WISH(ES) COULD BASE VERB
Example 1: I wish I could go with you, but I have to work.
Example 2: He wishes he could say "happy birthday" in person, but he can't be here.
Example 3: I wish I could eat anything I wanted without gaining weight!
In each of these situations, we see that the things that we wish for won't happen, or aren't likely to happen.
