For today's Tense Tuesday, we are going to talk about habitual actions in the past. To see past Daily Vitamins about this topic, click on the link below.
https://www.ziggurat.es/es/lecciones_ingles/index.asp?rs=used%20to
We use WOULD BASE VERB (=infinitive without "to") and USED TO BASE VERB in order to talk about habitual or on-going activities or situations in the past.
Example 1: When I was a child, we used to go to the mountains every Christmas.
Example 2: When Sarah was a child, her family would go skiing in the Pyrenees each winter.
We can use WOULD or USED TO for past repeated situations, but we can only use USED TO when talking about former states.
Example 3: He used to speak French well.
Example 4: We used to live in the countryside.
Remember that this action must be repeated. If it happened only once, then we use the Simple Past.
Example 5 (incorrect): I
Example 6 (correct): I visited Italy in 1987.
