THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM: meaning and examples

Happy Thursday, everyone. Welcome back to the Daily Vitamin. I hope your week has been going well.

Today we look at another colloquial English expression.

Today's expression is: THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

Meaning: When we say that there is an elephant in the room, we mean that there is an obvious problem or controversial issue which is present but we avoid discussing it.

Example 1: At my brother's wedding, there was an elephant in the room, as everyone avoided talking about Uncle John's recent divorce.

Example 2: The marketing team's meeting felt uncomfortable with all of the layoffs looming like an elephant in the room; no one dared to discuss it.
